Save the monarch - Plant milkweed!!
by Bob Hartzler
February 4, 2002 - While reading the gardening section of the Des Moines Register yesterday my attention was grabbed by a picture of a monarch with the caption 'Save the Monarch'. The short piece described where people could purchase milkweed seed to plant as a resource for monarchs. Somewhat surprisingly, they did not specify what species of milkweed you would be purchasing. However, I suspect the plant they are selling isn't common milkweed or honeyvine milkweed - the two milkweed species found in Iowa that have weedy characteristics. Regardless, the article ties in nicely with the survey I have been involved with looking at the distribution of common milkweed in Iowa.
