Handweeding Ban in California

October 1,  2004 - In news that would make farm kids from previous generations smile, the California legislature recently approved a partial ban on handweeding.  The purpose of the law is to reduce risks of back injury associated with long hours of stooping over to pull weeds.  Several exemptions are allowed, including organic crops and situations where long handled tools (hoes) would result in unacceptable crop injury. 

This is one of the few times I've been ahead of the curve, as anyone who has seen my home garden realizes I have had a personal ban on handweeding in place for several years.
